HSE-funded IVF at First IVF: do you qualify?

The HSE funds fertility treatment for couples who meet its access criteria, at approved private clinics like ours. Here's what it covers and who it's for.

What the HSE funds

One round of IVF or ICSI, free
each eligible couple can get one funded round
IUI, free
if it's the treatment your fertility hub recommends

The route always starts with your GP. You can't refer yourself for funded treatment, but you can choose First IVF once your fertility hub refers you on. See how it works.

THE CRITERIA

Who is eligible for free IVF in Ireland?

You and your partner must both meet all of the HSE's access criteria. These are the main rules. There's some nuance, so if you're unsure, ask us.

A couple, together at least a year

You both live in the Republic of Ireland and are both 18 or over.

Using your own eggs and sperm

Single people, same-sex couples and treatment with donor eggs or sperm aren't covered at the moment.

Woman under 41, man under 60

Your ages when your GP or consultant refers you to the regional fertility hub.

BMI between 18.5 and 30

For the woman. Your GP can check this with you.

No smoking or recreational drugs for 3 months

There are several across Ireland. You can't refer yourself.

Alcohol within the HSE limits

The birth mother: no more than 1 or 2 standard drinks, up to twice a week. The man: no more than 3 to 4 drinks at a time and 10 a week.

Never had a sterilisation

Including a vasectomy or having your tubes tied.

No more than one child together

You can have one living child together. You can't both have children from previous relationships.

Limited previous treatment

No free HSE treatment before. At most one earlier round of IVF, with no unused embryos still in storage.

Referred by your GP or consultant

You can't refer yourself to a regional fertility hub.
